Migrate from classic (v2) to modern (v3) backups

This article will guide you to upgrade from the legacy backup system to modern backups.

Overview

Once migrated to the new modern (v3) platform, you will need to perform a backup upgrade if you were using the the classic (v2) platform if you were using backup system.

If you were not using the v2 backup system we recommend you implement modern backups via: https://knowledge.mycloudit.com/creating-backups

The modern backup system provides many advantages over the classic one including full image based backups (v2 files only), efficient restore, more control over retention and not needing to manage server agent installs, among other advantages.

Part 1: Implement modern backups alongside your classic backups

For this part simple follow this guide making sure the vault name is different to your current vault name: https://knowledge.mycloudit.com/creating-backups

Part 2: Wait and monitor

Once an appropriate amount of days has passed, for many companies one month is sufficient (some companies require more retention during migration), check that the modern backups are successfully happening by

  1. Navigate to: https://portal.azure.com/#blade/HubsExtension/BrowseResource/resourceType/Microsoft.RecoveryServices%2Fvaults
  2. Click on your new vault
  3. Click "Backup items"
  4. Click "Azure Virtual Machine"
  5. Make sure all the VM's you wish to be backed up are backing up via the "view details" blade

Part 3: Delete classic v2 backups

Now that you have confirmed your modern v3 backups are completing as per your schedule you can now clean up the v2 backups.

  1. Navigate to: https://portal.azure.com/#blade/HubsExtension/BrowseResource/resourceType/Microsoft.RecoveryServices%2Fvaults
  2. Click on your old v2 classic vault
  3. Click "Properties"
  4. Click "Update" under "Security Settings"
  5. Select "Disabled" for Soft Delete
  6. Select "Disabled" for Security Features
  7. Click "Save"
  8. Click "Backup items"
  9. Click "Azure Backup Agent"
  10. Click "View details"
  11. Click on the link for the "Computer name"
  12. Click "Delete" (Warning this will delete backup data so make sure modern backups are working)
  13. Type the server name
  14. Select reason as "Migrated"
  15. In the comment type "Migrated"
  16. Tick the "There is backup data of .... " checkbox
  17. Click "Delete"
  18. Repeat steps 8 to 17 for all servers that were backed up with classic backups

Part 4: Clean up windows

Now that you have confirmed your modern v3 backups are completing as per your schedule you can now clean up the v2 backups.

  1. Log into the virtual machine that was being backed up via RMM tool or RDP
  2. Navigate to Windows control panel
  3. Select "Programs and features" OR "uninstall a program"
  4. Click "Microsoft azure recovery services agent"
  5. Click "Uninstall/Change"
  6. Click "Uninstall"
  7. Repeat steps 1 to 6 for every server that was backed up with class backups

Part 5: Delete classic v2 vault

Now that you have confirmed your modern v3 backups are completing as per your schedule you can now clean up the v2 backups.

  1. Navigate to: https://portal.azure.com/#blade/HubsExtension/BrowseResource/resourceType/Microsoft.RecoveryServices%2Fvaults
  2. Click on your old v2 classic vault
  3. Click "Delete"
  4. Tick "I confirm that the ..." checkbox
  5. Click "Yes"
Congratulations you have now migrated from classic to modern backups.
